The thematic focus of Beer Merz’s guest lectureship

Under the theme “Last Islands,” the guest studio will focus on examining distinct buildings that stand out within the urban fabric. Throughout both semesters, these unique structures will be analyzed for their architectural and cultural significance. In the first semester, attention will be directed towards an ensemble of small-scale buildings on Burgweg in Zurich Riesbach. Together with the students, we will explore strategies for approaching these structures with respect for their existing values. This involves recognizing their architectural and historical qualities, understanding both their potentials and risks, and conducting a thorough analysis of the building stock. The study will also consider streets, squares, gardens, and other green spaces, as well as the relationship of the buildings to their surrounding environment.

The overarching goals of the studio include developing a nuanced understanding of existing structures, encouraging independent thinking about the interconnectedness of elements, and uncovering hidden qualities and potential. Through detailed analysis and on-site visits, students will explore principles of historic preservation, develop practical solutions, and engage with broader perspectives on architecture and urbanism.

During the course of the project, emphasis will be placed on balancing conservation with future development potential. By exploring the possibilities for future use, students will be able to formulate well-founded design strategies and robust concepts. We believe that the future evolution of our built environment is grounded in a deep understanding of what already exists. This approach ensures that new interventions are both respectful of the past and responsive to future needs.

Anja Beer & David Merz

Anja Beer and David Merz are co-leading a guest studio focused on design within heritage contexts at the Institute for Preservation and Construction History at ETH Zurich during the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters. Since establishing their office, Beer Merz, they have specialized primarily in developing and managing renovation and restoration projects, with a growing emphasis on collaborating with heritage preservation authorities.

Both Anja Beer and David Merz gained experience in renowned architectural firms in Basel after graduating from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland. Prior to their academic studies, David Merz completed his Matura, while Anja Beer trained as a structural engineer. This hands-on background is evident in the office’s projects, such as the transformation of the First Church of Christ Scientist into a rehearsal center for the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the renovation of Villa Merian in Münchenstein, and the restoration and modernization of Zurich’s Grossmünster church. Each project is defined by a deep engagement with the existing structures and a pursuit of carefully considered, respectful design solutions.

Anja Beer regularly serves as a jury member for architectural competitions and has been part of the Local Heritage Commission for Riehen, Basel-Stadt since 2023. After her admission to the Federation of Swiss Architects (BSA) in 2018, she became active in the Basel local group, assuming its presidency in 2023. Since May 2024, she serves as Co-President of BSA Switzerland alongside Lilitt Bollinger.

David Merz served as a design assistant and lecturer in construction realization at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) in Muttenz from 2009 to 2016. Since becoming a member of the Federation of Swiss Architects (BSA) in 2018, he has actively contributed to the SIA 102 LHO commission, is involved in the ongoing revision process of the LHO (Fee Regulations for Architects and Engineers) through taking part in various working groups.
